Philippe Rio is the mayor of Grigny, one of the poorest towns in France. In 2021, he won the prize of the World’s Best Mayor, in recognition of his work to fight inequalities and advance the human rights of his constituents. “It is a reward for the community and a huge kick to fatalism” Rio said, praising his constituents for their solidarity efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
