Overview

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has been present in Guinea-Bissau since 1999 when UNOGBIS was established. The Senior Human Rights Adviser was deployed in August 2021 following the exit of the UN mission in December 2020. The SHRA’s mandate focuses on strengthening the capacity of the United Nations Country Team in Guinea-Bissau to integrate human rights in their programs and policies and on assisting national actors to comply with human rights obligations under international law.

Project reunites trafficked children with families

A project in west Africa aims to help reunite children living on city streets with their families, often based in other countries. Guinea-Bissau has completed its first Voluntary National Review of achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals. To do this, the country enlisted the support of the UN system, under the aegis of the UN Resident Coordinator, including the UN Human Rights Surge Initiative, and the UN Resident Coordinator.

Universal Periodic Review

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a unique process which involves a review of the human rights records of all UN Member States. The UPR is a State-driven process, under the auspices of the Human Rights Council, which provides the opportunity for each State to declare what actions they have taken to improve the human rights situations in their countries and to fulfil their human rights obligations.
