The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Human Rights in Cambodia, Peter Leuprecht, will conduct his first mission to that country from 26 November to 2 December.
The visit, Mr. Leuprecht said, will focus mainly on the following issues:
- eradication of violence; - the rule of law; - implementation of international human rights instruments to which Cambodia is a party; - poverty and respect for economic and social rights, and - the situation of women and children, including issues such as trafficking, sexual exploitation, and child labour
The Special Representative will meet with senior officials of the Cambodian Government, representatives of non-governmental organizations, United Nations agencies and members of the diplomatic corps.
The Special Representative, who took up the post earlier this year following the resignation of Thomas Hammarberg, will include the findings from the visit in his report to the fifty-seventh session of the Commission on Human Rights next spring.
