SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON EXTRAJUDICIAL, SUMMARY OR ARBITRARY EXECUTIONS TO VISIT BRAZIL

The Commission on Human Rights’ Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Asma Jahangir, will visit Brazil from 16 September to 8 October 2003. The Special Rapporteur is scheduled to visit a number of cities and towns in Brazil, starting from Brasilia. During her visit, Asma Jahangir is scheduled to meet Government ministers, senior Government officials, representatives of the police, the judiciary, and the security forces. She also plans to meet with lawyers, representatives of non-governmental organizations, as well as other private organizations and individuals. The visit comes at the invitation of the Government of Brazil. On completion of the mission, the Special Rapporteur will prepare a report to be presented at the 60th session of the Commission on Human Rights in 2004. Asma Jahangir, an advocate at the Supreme Court of Pakistan, was appointed Special Rapporteur in August 1998 by the Commission on Human Rights. Since then she has carried out a number of field visits, including visits to Mexico, East Timor, Nepal, Turkey and Honduras, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Albania in connection with the Kosovo conflict, the Democratic Republic of Congo and most recently, Afghanistan in October 2002 and Jamaica in February 2003.
