Afrikaans is spoken by about 5 million people. It belongs to the Indo-European family, Germanic group, West Germanic subgroup. Afrikaans is a development of 17th-century Dutch brought to South Africa by the first settlers from Holland. The subsequent isolation of the people and their descendants caused increasing deviations from the original Dutch, so that Afrikaans may now be considered a separate language, with lexical and syntactic borrowings from Bantu and Khoisan languages and also other European languages (French and English). Afrikaans is also spoken in Namibia (over 150,000 home speakers).
