背景
It belongs to the Benue-Congo family, Bantu group and is spoken by over 5 million people. Luganda is the native language of the people of "Baganda", living principally in the former kingdom of Buganda, which is located in the southern region and includes the capital city of Kampala. Its written form is only as recent as the arrival of the Arab and European influence. However, it was not until after the second half of the nineteenth century that Luganda was first written down and appeared in print in its own right. The first writing clearly was an improvisation by early missionaries who tried to put in words the sounds they perceived so that their work among the Baganda could be made easier. In Uganda it is the most widely spoken second language next to English and is used in primary schools, on the radio and in newspapers.
