背景
It belongs to the Austronesian (Malayo-Pplynesian) family, Indonesian group and is spoken by nearly 7 million people, chiefly in Sumatra. It is not intelligible with Indonesian. There is a Minang newspaper and a radio station in Jakarta. It is also taught at school (1st and 2nd grade) though texts are in Indonesian. Latin script is used.
