Background

During its 98th session, from 23 April to 10 May 2019, the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination ("the Committee") initiated the drafting process of general recommendation n° 36 on preventing and combatting racial profiling. The Committee wishes to invite all interested stakeholders to comment on the Committee’s Draft (see below).

Stakeholders, including States, UN and regional human rights mechanisms, UN organisations or specialised agencies, National Human Rights Institutions, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), research institutions, and academics were invited to send their comments in writing before 30 June 2019.

Day of thematic discussion
29 November 2017

In November 2017, during its 92nd session, the Committee hold a thematic discussion on "Racial discrimination in today’s world: racial profiling, ethnic cleansing and challenges". The event focused on analysing the experiences, challenges and lessons learned on combatting racial profiling and ethnic cleansing. Following the discussion, the Committee expressed its intention to elaborate a general recommendation to provide guidance on preventing and combatting racial profiling.
